The University of Science and Technology of Beijing held an opening ceremony at the campus hall on Tuesday to introduce its upcoming initiatives aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals project.
In response to critical global challenges like poverty and inequality, leaders from 193 countries came to a consensus on The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, as proposed by the UN. This agenda comprises 17 SDGs encompassing key areas such as education, healthcare, social welfare, employment equality, climate change mitigation, and environmental preservation.
The University of Science and Technology of Beijing has planned a series of events, including an opening ceremony, a poster contest, and an energy conservation and emissions reduction competition, to actively involve more students and teachers in advancing the SDGs.
"Our university is committed to integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the cultivation of high-quality human resources," stated Yang Renshu, president of the university.
Shahbaz Khan, director of the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, graced the ceremony with his presence, urging students to engage with the SDGs.
"Our young students play a crucial role in bolstering the resilience of their communities, offering innovative solutions, and importantly, propelling social progress and influencing political change," Khan emphasized.
"Young individuals are brimming with innovation. They serve as catalysts for change, mobilizing and advancing sustainable development goals. I applaud the university for undertaking this commendable initiative," he expressed.
